We mine for copper in Zambia through our majority shareholding in Mopani Copper Mines situated in the north of the country near the city of Kitwe, in the African Copperbelt. How have you contributed to Zambia's economy? We have invested more than $1 billion in the Mopani mine since 2014 extending its life by a further 25 to 30 years.
But one particular strip of Zambia’s Copperbelt Province has managed to completely turn statistics on their head. When Mopani Copper Mines commenced operations in 2000, the region’s malaria control activities had completely come to a halt, and the disease’s incidence rate had risen to 216 people in a population of 1000.
Copper mining has been the main economic mainstay of the Zambian economy, contributing more than 70% of its income export.
